While the cancellation of E3 2023 has reduced the number of gaming events happening this summer, other events will hopefully make up for its absence. Keeping track of streaming and event schedules over several months can be somewhat difficult, so we have gathered the calendar of summer gaming galas for you.

Here is every confirmed upcoming gaming event in the summer of 2023 to keep you hyped for future releases.

Earlier this year, Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo announced they wouldn’t be attending E3. This sparked rumors and speculation that the lack of these big names would mean the show wouldn’t work. It turns out that was the case, and it has been announced that E3 will not be returning after all.

Unnamed sources were the ones that revealed this news to IGN, but it originated from an email from the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) sent to all members. This E3 would’ve been the first in four years after the last show took place in 2019, then got sidelined due to COVID-19. While it might not have been the final nail, it was only earlier this week that Ubisoft also gave notice that it wouldn’t be taking part in E3, either.

The first physical E3 in four years may be without some of the industry’s heaviest hitters, with reports indicating that Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo will not be present in Los Angeles.

Sources close to IGN have revealed that Microsoft’s presentation will be limited to a simultaneous showcase — one that Xbox CEO Phil Spencer ambiguously stated would take place “at a time where hopefully it’s convenient for press and even consumers that are going to the E3 event,” — foregoing a booth on the show floor itself.

Today the Entertainment Software Association announced the dates and more details about the upcoming E3 2023 event.

The event will be hosted in person for the first time in several years at the traditional Los Angeles Convention Center.

The ESA has announced today that E3 will return in the second week of June 2023, and will partner with PAX organizer, ReedPop, to produce the show.

The news comes following three years of an in-person version of E3 having not taken place. Instead, in past years, developers and publishers have ran their own livestreams to showcase announcements of upcoming games, and industry veteran Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest has also helped fill the early June void left by the tradeshow.

The Not-E3, er, Keigh-3, Summer Games Fest featured tons of the best upcoming indie games for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PC. From dedicated indie presentations like the Wholesome Direct to huge stages like the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, indie developers were highlighted throughout the week. In case you couldn’t keep up with the literal hours of presentations, here’s a look at the best indie games shown this year.

PlayStation State of Play 

The PlayStation State of Play kicked off the summer festivities with huge first-party announcements but also took the time to highlight No Man’s Sky and Tunic. No Man’s Sky has been out for a while but is getting a nice update for the PlayStation. Tunic will be launching on PlayStation for the first time since its release earlier this year.

With no E3 again this year, the companies behind the games, and even a few gaming sites, took it upon themselves to give fans almost an entire month of gaming showcases. Each of these events featured plenty of exciting news, trailers, and world premiers, providing a lot of excitement, joy, and intrigue as a result.

Of all of these big showcases, the same question that usually comes up at the end of E3 remains: who had the best presentation? These are the best non-E3 games showcases of 2022, ranked worst to best.

Today Microsoft and Asobo Studio hosted a livestream showcasing upcoming plans for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

As usual, we hear from head of Microsoft Flight Simulator Jorg Neumann, Asobo CEO Sebastian Wlock, and executive producer Martial Bossard.

Today we learn that the ESA has decided not to host E3 2022.

Rumors circulated earlier today with Razer PR lead Will Powers sharing the gist of a mail he received mentioning that the show was canceled.

With the current concerns over the Omicron wave, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has made an early call in regards to E3 2022. As reported by GamesBeat, the annual gaming convention is once again forgoing the physical component, and going online instead. This will be the second year in a row that the show is digital following its cancellation back in 2020.

“Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding Covid-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022,” the organizers of E3, the ESA, told GamesBeat. “We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

REPLACED made a big splash at E3 2021, and for good reason — the upcoming cinematic platformer oozes cool, from its gorgeous 2.5D pixelated art aesthetic to the promise of a thrilling cyberpunk story set in a grim dystopia. The brilliantly directed trailer depicted a tantalizing and mysterious gaming experience that we here at Twinfinite have been making a song and dance over ever since.

Naturally, the opportunity to speak with developer Sad Cat Studios was one we are hugely excited about. Already this week we’ve published a feature titled ‘REPLACED Aims to Deliver a Cinematic But Thought-Provoking Cyberpunk Experience,’ which is based around some of the most interesting takeaways from my discussion with game director Yura Zhdanovich, and studio co-founder Igor Gritsay. But with so much ground to cover I could hardly include everything, and that, dear reader, is something we considered such a crying shame that we’ve decided to publish the entire Q&A for those who are as interested to hear from the pair as we are.

Another E3 is in the books, though this one was definitely different from past examples of the event. Following all the craziness of last year that led to the event taking a hiatus, E3 2021 saw several marked changes to the Expo’s usual format; not least of which being a shift toward a digital-only approach. Now that the dust has settled, a question has arisen: When comparing E3 2019 vs E3 2021, which was better? Did the changes made help the show overall, or were there notable growing pains?

Fable

Biggest No-Shows at E3 2021

A new Fable game from developer Playground Games got officially announced last summer, so it would’ve been nice to at least get a bit of an update on the progress of the game. Instead, it was one of the biggest no-shows of E3 2021. After seeing Playground Games unveil Forza Horizon 5, it became abundantly clear that their time was probably being spent elsewhere.

It makes complete sense, even though the lack of Fable at Xbox’s E3 event was disappointing for fans. At least the game got mentioned, and some old footage was shown in a little sizzle reel at the end of the stream. Fable was a no-show, but at least it wasn’t completely forgotten.

Replaced

Indie Games That Stole the Show During E3 2021

Replaced was easily one of the best-looking indie games on display at E3 2021. It came out of nowhere and had our eyes glued to the screen during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. Its 2.5D pixel-art style provided some of the best visuals of any game shown on that stream. Replaced is a sci-fi action platformer that has players in the role of an AI named R.E.A.C.H. trapped inside a human body.

We got to see a bit of its combat, platforming, and retro-futuristic 1980s world in a short trailer. This seems like one that you should keep an eye on if you’re at all interested in the genre. It’s being developed by Sad Cat Studios and published by Coatsink, and it’ll be coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Only on Steam and Mobile

Square Enix came to E3 2021 and brought the biggest self-own with it. The Final Fantasy series is one beloved by players of all ages, and the first six titles are arguably some of the best the series ever produced. So you can imagine how over the moon fans were when the publisher announced it was remastering Final Fantasy’s 1 through 6 with pixel-art refreshes to both its characters and environments. Seriously, this was a massive announcement.

And then it happened, at the very end of the brief trailer running players through the changes the development team has been busy working on, the title appeared on screen. Each of the six games appeared below it, and ‘Coming Soon’ slowly faded into view.
