During the PAX West main stage Gearbox Software panel, a new trailer for the New Tales from the Borderlands was shown off. The New Tales from the Borderlands is developed by Gearbox Software Quebec and is the first game they have developed. While it is considered another entry in the Tales from the Borderlands franchise, this game is also entirely standalone.

This trailer covers the game’s brand-new characters and some more detail was given on stage. The New Tales from the Borderlands takes place just about a year after the events of Borderlands 3. The story takes place on the planet Promethea, a prominent Borderlands 3 location.

PAX West fans are in for a treat, as the preliminary exhibitor’s list for the 2022 version of the event was released earlier today. The event, which is set to take place this September, sees the return of a lot of notable names in the industry, including Nintendo, Devolver Digital, and Thunderful Games, just to name a few.

When discussing the event,  Penny Arcade and PAX co-founder Jerry Holkins had the following to say:

The ESA has announced today that E3 will return in the second week of June 2023, and will partner with PAX organizer, ReedPop, to produce the show.

The news comes following three years of an in-person version of E3 having not taken place. Instead, in past years, developers and publishers have ran their own livestreams to showcase announcements of upcoming games, and industry veteran Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest has also helped fill the early June void left by the tradeshow.

PAX West is officially returning in 2022, welcoming the gaming industry back to Seattle for another instance of the most attended gaming convention on the West Coast. The news came by way of a press release earlier today, which also revealed when badges will be going on sale.

A little over a week ago, PAX East 2022 officially ended, signaling a close to a weekend’s worth of great displays and fun for a lot of interesting video games. And while there were some pretty notable titles there, including Dead Cells and Splitgate, there were a handful of titles that really caught me off guard.

From a rockband roguelike to a cult-building adventure title, these are the 10 surprising PAX East games that stole the show. 

Earlier today at PAX East, Gearbox announced a brand-new atmospheric platformer titled Eyes in the Dark. The black and white visuals look very similar to older titles like Closure and Inside. However, the art is a bit more detailed and playful than those relatively dark and somber games. Eyes in the Dark

This trailer for Eyes in the Dark showed off some gameplay featuring a young character taking on enemies with a flashlight. The light given off appears to be the main way that you deal damage to monsters.

The global COVID-19 pandemic forced many in-person events to reschedule, move online, or outright cancel over the past two years or so. PAX East 2021 was canceled then moved online due to health and safety concerns, but the event is returning in 2022 to the Boston Convention Center from Thursday, Apr. 21, to Sunday, Apr. 24.

Even with this return to form, health and safety regulations are still a concern. This means that full vaccinations will be required and face coverings will be mandatory for anyone who attends PAX East. In fact, proof of vaccination will be necessary for all PAX events in the foreseeable future.

Today organizers ReedPop and Penny Arcade announced that PAX East 2021 has been canceled and replaced with a PAX Online event.

The event, which will obviously take place only online, will happen between Thursday, July 15 and Sunday, July 18. 

In the past year, we have seen the pandemic lay waste to the plans of both game developers and the industry at large, resulting in delays, cancellations, and a new reality of remote working and events. With E3 2021 reportedly cancelled, this new normal looks set to continue. However, PAX Australia is stepping up to the plate next with a live show set for October.

The show will take place at its familiar home of the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. Due to capacity restrictions, ticket sales will be limited, at least in the initial stages.

Conventions were either shut down or seriously altered across the board in 2020, but the PAX team is hoping to return to live events next year. Several dates for PAX 2021 have just been announced by the team on Twitter.

PAX generally hosts a variety of esport competitions at their various shows throughout the year, however, this year is obviously not like other years. While PAX shows other than East have been shutdown for the year, PAX Arena announced today that they will host the $25,000 Valorant Invitational Powered By Seagate.

The Valorant Invitational will take place starting on July 22 with round robin play featuring 20 teams and the field will eventually whittle its way down over the next few days – down to eight for the single-elimination quarter finals starting on Friday – until the finals are reached on Sunday, July 26.

Just as has been the case for virtually every physical video game convention in 2020 so far, Pax West has been canceled as a result of COVID-19. In its place comes Pax Online, a digital showcase running from Sept. 12-20, set to deliver a “steady 24/7 stream of content, events, discussions, and gameplay.”

The video game fan convention that is PAX East 2020 was filled to the brim with indie and AAA titles for people to get their hands on. While I played a variety of different games during my time there, here are the best indie games from the show that you’ll all want to keep an eye on this year.

Spin Rhythm XD

I thought the whole DJ turntable rhythm game idea died out once DJ Hero was slowly wiped from the minds of gamers back in the day but with Spin Rhythm XD, the development team is bringing back a similar style of gameplay with the sickest of beats.

Over the past month or so, the Coronavirus crisis from Wuhan, China has certainly continued to worry people all over the world as the number of confirmed cases increases. To that end, companies and people are starting to avoid congested or crowded areas to minimize the risk of contracting the virus, and you can now add CD Projekt Red to that list.

With PAX East kicking off this week, it wasn’t long before both Sony and Square Enix announced that they would no longer be attending the event due to medical and health concerns. This means that attendees wouldn’t be able to check out The Last of Us Part II or Final Fantasy VII remake.

Nintendo of America has announced via a press release today that it will be bringing a playable demo of Animal Crossing: New Horizons to PAX East 2020. The game will be available to try out during the entire show (Feb 27 to March 1) and there will also be a “full-scale immersive booth experience” that’s inspired by New Horizons.

A few days ago, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it would cancel its attendance to PAX East in Boston due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Today, we hear a notable voice disagreeing with that stance.

As reported by WCVB (via Resetera) Boston’s mayor Marty Walsh addressed a formal letter to Sony’s president and chief executive officer Kenichiro Yoshida formally requesting the company to reconsider its stance.

Square Enix usually has a strong Final Fantasy XIV presence at PAX East, but unfortunately this year something got in the way.

The publisher announced that due to concerns caused by the Coronavirus outbreak, the game’s staff from Japan who was supposed to be in attendance will stay home, causing the cancellation of some planned events.

Sony has canceled its participation of Pax East 2020 just a week before the show kicks off, citing fears over the spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19. The news comes by way of Sony’s content communications manager Justin Massongill, who explained the decision over on the PS Blog earlier today.

Massongill explains that while the company regretted the action but felt it necessary to protect “the health and safety [of its] global workforce” first and foremost.

Larian Studios has been fairly secretive about the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 following the reveal in June 2019, but it’s finally about time to lift the veil.

Today the developer released a video providing a few sneak peeks on development assets and the usual inevitable comedy, but the juicy part comes at the end.
