August is more than half over, so we need to look ahead. PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers had a decent month with solid offerings. While our predictions were wrong, we’re going to give it a new go. The real selections should be announced on Aug. 31 because PlayStation usually reveals the PS Plus games on the last Thursday of the month.

No More Heroes 3

Travis Touchdown returns for his third adventure, set 11 years after No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle. October will be the one-year anniversary of the non-Switch console release and a good time to introduce more gamers to the series. This game once again takes place in Santa Destroy, and it is under siege by an alien invasion. The aliens take control and seek to set up a ranking of the strongest fighters on Earth, which causes Travis to sign up.

While No More Heroes 2 didn’t arrive on any other consoles besides the Wii, what better time to expose a new audience to the series? This high-action hack-and-slash is perfect for the PlayStation Plus service and would increase hype for Grasshopper Manufacture games, especially with a remake of Lollipop Chainsaw coming.

Cult of the Lamb

Don’t let the adorable cartoon graphics mislead you; Cult of the Lamb is a great time. After a deity saves the life of the ovine main character, they are tasked with starting a cult in their honor. This leads to plenty of procedural generation goodness as players must wander from their cult’s camp into the game’s other regions to grow their numbers and influence. Cult of the Lamb mixes a management sim with a roguelike for terrific results.

Like our above prediction, it’s been a touch over a year since the release of Cult of the Lamb. The PlayStation Plus offerings for August included a Devolver Digital game with Death’s Door, so there is a history of their published games hitting the service. As we go into the spooky season, this is a decent choice.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me

The slide into the spooky season should never be gradual. Instead, it should be all at once, like the one day you walk into Walmart, and it’s black and orange everywhere. That’s why we’d also love the most recent Dark Pictures Anthology game. The Devil in Me takes players into a history lesson about the very first American serial killer: H. H. Holmes. This notorious killer had a set building used for his crimes, dubbed the “Murder Castle.” A camera crew has been invited to tour the infamous building, but they might be getting more than expected.

As Man of Medan was also available through PlayStation Plus, there is every reason to believe Devil in Me would also be a prime candidate for a free title. As this game serves as the season finale of the Anthology and the start of two has not yet been announced, might as well offer this title to tide fans over.
